STAR Fellowship Program

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center is pleased to announce the Summer Training in Anesthesia Research (STAR) fellowship for High school, Undergraduate and Medical Students this summer.

The program begins Monday, June 3, 2024 and runs for 10 weeks. Students participating in the program are expected to spend 40 hours per week and will receive a stipend for that 10-week period based on their academic levels. Stipends may be adjusted to reflect any changes in the program structure or time commitment.

Objectives

  • Broaden a student’s scientific knowledge and awareness in basic, preclinical, and clinical research
  • Gain hands on experience in the state of the art laboratories
  • Participate in weekly seminar program to enrich scientific learning and presentation skills
  • Provide an opportunity to interact with both basic and clinician scientists in the department

 

Eligibility

The STAR fellowship aims to support students at different stages of their careers:

  •  H-STAR fellow: The goal is to support high school students entering their junior or senior year this fall. Junior students applying to the H-STAR program must be 16 years or older. A stipend of $1,500 ($150/week) will be awarded to the selected candidate(s) for a maximum duration of 10 weeks.
  • U-STAR Fellow: The goal here is to support undergraduate students entering sophomore, junior and senior years this fall. A stipend of $3,000 ($300/week) will be awarded to the selected candidate(s) for a maximum duration of 10 weeks.
  • M-STAR Fellow: The goal here is to support medical students interested in gaining basic research experience. A stipend of $4,000 ($400/week) will be awarded to the selected candidate(s) for a maximum duration of 10 weeks.

At the end of the 10 weeks, fellows are required to present their research at

department/university-wide summer undergraduate student poster session.

Application

Interested candidates need to submit their resume, a one-page personal statement on their research interests and unofficial transcripts as a single PDF by email to the fellowship director, Dr. Yelamanchili at syelamanchili@unmc.edu, Co-Director Dr. Gao at lgao@unmc.edu and Cc. Ms. Carolle Dogbevi at cadogbevi@unmc.edu. The application deadline is Friday, March 1, 2024, at 5 p.m. CT. Decisions will be posted on March 15, 2024.
