Learn more about the Liver Transplant Anesthesiology Fellowship Program at UNMC.

Video Transcript

Our fellowship trains and mentors future liver transplant anesthesiologists to excel clinically and in the fields of education and research.

We are committed to providing each fellow with the highest quality experience and education. We offer one position annually in this non-ACGME-accredited fellowship.

Our fellowship includes broad-based clinical experiences, such as:

  • Cadaveric adult and pediatric liver transplantation
  • Living donor liver transplantation
  • Adult and pediatric multivisceral transplantation
  • Small bowel transplantation
  • Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery
  • Pediatric and adult intestinal rehabilitation surgery

UNMC's primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, has a large clinical volume, providing our fellows abundant experience and personalized training. The fellow will spend eight months as a transplant anesthesia fellow and four months as junior faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. During their time as faculty, they will participate as the attending anesthesiologist, supervising residents and Nebraska Medicine CRNAs.

The program meets current core competencies and milestones endorsed by the Society for the Advancement of Transplant. Liver Transplant fellows should expect to qualify for the National Board of Echocardiography Basic PTE Certification after passing the Basic PTE Exam.

Fellows are encouraged to participate in research projects for publication and presentation. They will participate in quality improvement projects during the fellowship and attend national transplant meetings.

Application Process

Applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency program in Anesthesiology and must be eligible for a permanent medical license granted by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services

Applications are accepted on a continual basis, and we encourage the submission of completed materials no later than May 1 of the calendar year prior to the start of the fellowship year (i.e. during CA-2 year). Applications will be reviewed in late winter and early spring. Formal interview invitations will be extended to select applicants in the spring. Applications can be emailed to the program coordinator.

The selection of fellows is based on academic performance during residency, in-training examination scores, research experience, letters of recommendation from faculty anesthesiologists, and conduct during an interview.
