ACL-WALK Research Study: Walking and Loading after Knee Injury

Did you know that young, active people who have experienced an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury are at increased risk for breakdown of the cartilage in the knee?

The purpose of the ACL Walking and Loading after Knee Injury Research Study (ACL-WALK) was to determine how physical activity and movement patterns during walking contribute to cartilage breakdown in the knee after ACL injury. Fifty percent of young people with an ACL injury will show signs of osteoarthritis within 10 years of injury, but treatments to prevent it do not exist. Our long-term goal is to develop new treatment to implement during rehabilitation to prevent osteoarthritis after knee injury. The study will measure movement patterns after ACL injury and compare them to changes in the knee using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
