What is a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)?

A Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is a food and nutrition expert who works in a wide variety of employment settings, including hospitals, research facilities or universities, food and nutrition related businesses and industries, community nutrition such as government sponsored public health programs or program development, sports nutrition and corporate wellness programs.

An RD understands the science of nutrition and is skilled in the art of teaching and counseling. The UNMC Master of Medical Nutrition program will prepare you to be an RD or RDN. Find more information from Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics about educational pathways to become a RDN.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dietitians and nutritionists is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.
