Certification & Licensure

General Disclosure

The US Department of Education requires the Occupational Therapy program to provide professional licensure information to students regarding academic programs that lead to a professional licensure or certification that is required for employment. Professional licensure/certification requirements vary from state to state, which may affect a student’s ability to apply for a professional license/certification upon the completion of the program.

Please check with your advisor, department chair, or certification officer for further details.

Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program

Students graduating from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupational Therapy Association are eligible to take the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy certification exam and apply for licensure in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure. States other than Nebraska may have additional requirements for licensure. Requirements such as fingerprinting, background checks, and other requirements may vary between states For more information regarding state qualifications and licensure requirements, please refer to the AOTA State Licensure webpage.
