Certification & Licensure

General Disclosure

The US Department of Education requires the Diagnostic Cytology program to provide professional licensure information to students regarding academic programs that lead to a professional licensure or certification that is required for employment. Professional licensure/certification requirements vary from state to state, which may affect a student’s ability to apply for a professional license/certification upon the completion of the program.

Please check with your advisor, department chair, or certification officer for further details.

Diagnostic Cytology Program

Cytologists are not licensed in the state of Nebraska, however, to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology certification, requires graduating from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs accredited program.

States other than Nebraska may have additional requirements for licensure. Requirements such as fingerprinting, background checks, and other requirements may vary between states.

* To apply to the program, applicants located in California are required to have a bachelor’s degree with specific course requirements: 20 semester or equivalent quarter units of biological science; 8 semester or equivalent quarter units of chemistry; 3 semester or equivalent quarter units of mathematics. Prospective students in states where this program does not meet the educational requirements for licensure, but who plan to work in a state where the program meets licensure requirements after graduation, must provide an attestation of this intention before enrolling in the program.
