Bio

What do you do at UNMC?
I serve as the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program director and chair of the Department of Education, Research and Practice in the College of Allied Health Professions. I’m involved in CAHP’s focus to develop a core and longitudinal IPE curriculum that will meet the needs of the college’s diverse programs. I’m also honored to work as a coach for Faculty Development’s Creative Coaching program.

Tell us about your educational research interests and teaching role.
In addition to teaching duties in the MLS program, I teach in the Health Professions Teaching and Technology program and an undergraduate, basic-level education course for CAHP students. My research interests involve innovative educational strategies such as using video to provide “cognitive” procedural practice and supporting female faculty in health professions education. As I delve more and more into IPE, I’m becoming interested in exploring how and what learning occurs in interprofessional learning environments.

What is one of your favorite/memorable teaching moments?
I’m a big believer in active learning. I enjoy a learning environment where learners are collaborating, discussing, utilizing resources and the rich debriefing discussion that occurs to conclude those educational activities. I enjoy catching up with our graduate practitioners to learn how their professional careers have evolved and how they are building on the knowledge they gained while completing the MLS program.

What do you see as the biggest benefit to being a member of the IAE?
I enjoy the endless experience and expertise the members bring to the Academy. It’s great to network and have teaching and learning discussions. The IAE provides great resources to its members.

What do you enjoy doing in your free (non-work) time?
I like to read, spend time with family, play tennis and I take a long walk each day.
