Bio

What do you do at UNMC?
I am fortunate to be involved in education, patient care and administration at UNMC. I am a practicing endocrinologist with a particular interest in transplant endocrinology. Within the division of endocrinology, I also serve as the fellowship program director and participate in fellow, resident, and medical student education. I have also enjoyed the opportunity to be the Director of the IAE since January 2019.

Tell us about your educational research interests and teaching role.
As the endocrinology fellowship program director, I oversee the fellowship curriculum and provide clinical and didactic teaching for the fellows. I also enjoy participating in the Phase 1 Endocrine Block for medical students while providing lectures and clinical training for M3s, M4s and residents as they rotate through our clinic. I am interested in the transition from didactics to clinical learning and tools/methods to make this transition smooth and effective.

What is one of your favorite/memorable teaching moments?
This is not a single moment, but seeing a learner grasp endocrine feedback loops and then being able to successfully apply that knowledge to a clinical scenario, is always exciting. I find it particularly satisfying as I still remember studying feedback loops as a student. I recall the "ah-ha" moment when these concepts finally "clicked" for me and how this knowledge helped me appreciate and enjoy endocrinology.

Share a favorite Academy experience.
In November 2019, I was able to attend the Academies Collaborative meeting which was held during the AAMC annual meeting in Phoenix. Along with the interesting and insightful presentations given that day by Academies across the country, including our own IAE, I also enjoyed conversing with members and leadership from other Academies. In addition to valuable brainstorming, hearing experiences from other campuses and sharing our own experiences reaffirmed my appreciation for UNMC's excellence, dedication, and commitment to education and educators.

What do you enjoy doing in your free (non-work) time?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and our two sons, going hiking, camping, and biking. I also enjoy reading and have a particular interest in US history.
