welcome from the interim dean

Jane Meza, PhDWe appreciate your interest in learning more about the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).  The College of Public Health is one of nine major units comprising the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska’s only public academic health sciences center.  The College of Public Health champions interdisciplinary collaboration in education, research, practice, and service—across campuses, communities, regions, and the world.

Our multidisciplinary faculty are well-respected in a variety of fields, including cancer, pulmonary disease, tobacco control, obesity prevention, health policy, and health care workforce assessment.  College of Public Health faculty continue to build a robust research portfolio with external funding from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Gates Foundation.  Our faculty are dedicated to finding inventive and sustainable solutions to public health challenges.  They eagerly collaborate with public health practitioners and share their expertise with students, fostering an atmosphere of innovation and collegiality to benefit population health.

The UNMC College of Public Health offers a variety of doctoral, masters, dual-degree, and professional certificate programs.  We have doctoral and Master of Public Health (MPH) concentrations in the five core domains of biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health promotion, and health services administration.  Additionally, we have MPH concentrations in five specialized areas of community-oriented primary care, health policy, maternal and child health, public health practice, and social marketing and health communication.  We also offer a Master of Science in emergency preparedness, the first to be offered in the nation.

Our students are enthusiastic about their public health journey here at the College of Public Health.  They quickly connect with faculty, staff, and fellow students, and participate in courses, grand rounds, and other activities that augment their education.  Fundamentals of human rights, health equity, and the elimination of health disparities are interwoven throughout the curricula, further enhancing their learning experience and connecting the classroom to the real world.

Our students are recognized nationally and internationally for their research.  Our graduates are well-prepared to join the public health workforce and embark on rewarding careers that will improve the health of populations near and far.  Our alumni are achieving leadership roles in public health organizations.

We look forward to seeing you here, at the UNMC College of Public Health.
