Academic Background and Work Experience

Aura Whitney –Jackson,C.M.S.W. A Panamanian native, graduated from the University of Nebraska with a master degree in Social Work. She is a Certified Social Worker and a licensed Mental Health Practitioner in Nebraska. She works as a community liaison for the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Aura is passionate about caring for the less fortunate in our community. She has worked to create programs that help alleviate some of these needs, and she is responsible for producing two educational videos that are widely distributed throughout Nebraska, across the county, and even internationally. The first video is about healthy eating habits highlighting a local family in the community is portrayed in the production: “Comiendo Saludable con la Familia Robles”. The second video dealing with community violence, “Every Shot is Through the Heart, ” is used for discussion within a violence prevention curriculum. Aura was also involved in the creation of many other programs including: “For the love of Family” is a Spanish parenting program and the Spanish diabetes educational series of eight healthy living seminars, in Spanish, to improve health titled “Como Mantenerse Saludable.” Aura has been involved in the creation of two major conferences in Nebraska including the Heartland Latino Leadership Conference,the first Latino conference in Nebraska and Nebraska Association of Translators and Interpreters (NATI) Conference. These conferences have extended their reach drawing not only local participants, but also participants from across the country.

Aura is a member of many community boards in Omaha including El Museo Latino, Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Siena Francis House, Visiting Nurses Association, Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation, Lied Renaissance Center Campus Advisory Council of the Salvation Army, University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Social Work Practicum Advisory/Policy Committtee, and the Juan Diego Center Advisory Council. Aura has been recognized for her contributions to the local community and to Nebraska. She received the he Heartland Latino Leadership Conference Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), South Omaha Neighborhood Association Project of Merit: For the Love of the Family Project (2005) South Omaha Neighborhood Association Project of Merit: Every Shot it Through the Heart (2005), Omaha World Herald 31 People You Should Omaha Know, Heart of Social Work, City of Omaha Living The Dream Award, and the Joyce Harrison Memorial Award from the Nebraska Minority Public Health Association. Aura is married to Andrew Jackson and has two children and six grandchildren.
