A population-based cancer registry in Setif, Algeria was established in 1989, in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Setif is located in north Algeria west of Algiers (the capital of the country), and covers an area of 6540 Km2, with a population of about 1.5 million individuals. Setif has eight hospitals and a university center with 2025 hospital beds. There are 25 maternity hospitals, 15 polyclinics, 49 health centers, and 143 care units whose cancer data are included in the registry. The registry uses the latest version of CANREG and NEWCRG software. Registry data have been published for several years in the latest 2 versions of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents and Childhood Cancer, published by IARC. Registry leaders have mentored and trained 92 students and junior epidemiologists on the cancer registry data over the past 18 years and investigated the epidemiology of common cancers in the region, including nasopharyngeal, lung, and breast cancer.
