Paths to Careers 
in Nursing

There are many paths to careers in nursing. The type of education a person chooses determines what type of work they can do.

If you decide to work with nurses you may be a:

Nursing Assistant

Nursing assistants usually work in nursing homes or hospitals; others work with school nurses or community health nurses.

Nursing assistants may learn 'on the job' where they work. They learn to give baths, help people out of bed and into a chairs, and help them walk; nurse assistants pass meal trays and help feed people. Sometimes young people choose to be nursing assistants and then they may decide to go to school to become a nurse.

Nursing assistants may take courses to become certified. Certification means they have gained knowledge to do certain other jobs under the supervision or direction of a registered nurse. 

Certified nurse assistants use the initials CNA on their name tag at work.

If you decide to become a nurse you have several decisions to make: 
  1. What kind of a nursing degree do I want?
  2. How many years can I afford to be in school learning to be a nurse?

    Only you can answer question one and two but we will give some information to help you.
  3. What courses do I need to take in high school?
  4. What grades do I need to earn in high school?

    It is important to take science and math courses and to do well in school. The nursing school you choose will be specific in what they require.
  5. What initials would go after my name?

Read on for more answers to each of these questions.

Three kinds of basic nursing degrees:
Practical Nurses 

Years in school - it takes about 1 year to complete the program.
Classes to learn to be a practical ( vocational) nurse are usually offered at a community college.

High school courses you should take include nutrition, anatomy and physiology survey, and medical math. 

You need to earn B(2) grades in high school. 

After graduation from the practical nurse program at the community college, you must pass an examination to be a licensed practical nurse. Then you can use the initials LPN on your name tag.

Associate Degree Nurses 

It takes 2 years to complete the associate degree program. This program is usually taught in a community college.

High school courses you should take include chemistry, biology, English and a math course. 

Your high school grades need to be A's and B's (1's and 2's). 

After graduation from the associate degree program, you must pass a licensing examination to become a registered nurse. Then you can use the initials RN on your name tag.

Go on to be a leader:

Baccalaureate in Science Degree Nurses

It takes 4 years to complete the baccalaureate nursing program. This type of nursing program is taught in a college or university.

The courses you should take in high school include science courses (chemistry and biology), human growth and development, English, psychology, and a math course such a algebra. 

The grades in high school grades need to be A's and B's (1's and 2's). 

When you graduate from the baccalaureate nursing program, you must pass a licensing examination to become a register nurse. Then you can use the initials RN on your name tag. It is also okay for baccalaureate nurses to use the initials BSN,RN. BSN means you have a college degree with major in nursing.

Baccalaureate nurses are prepared for community health nursing and for leadership roles. 

You can continue on to earn an advanced degree when you wish.

 

Kinds of Advanced Nursing Degrees
Master of science in nursing degree
After you are an RN, you may want to become a specialist in one area of nursing, such as nursing administration, medical-surgical nursing, community health nursing, mental health nursing, etc.

You may earn an MSN in about 3 to 5 years of part time study in a university or college that offers a master’s degree in nursing.

Nurse Practitioner 
You may decide to become a nurse practitioner while you earn a master’s degree in nursing. As a nurse practitioner you would have a special practice because you would have special knowledge in treating nursing and medical problems.

At the end of the nurse practitioner program you must pass an examination to become certified and use the initials APRN,BC after your name. The initials mean advanced practice registered nurse, board certified.

Doctor of Nursing Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree
After you have a master’s degree, you may want to go to a university that has a doctoral degree program to earn the highest degree, a doctoral degree. Many nurses who have a doctoral degree do research or teach.

It will take about 5 years after a master’s degree to complete a doctoral program. After graduation, depending on the kind of doctoral degree you earned, you can add initials such as DNS or PhD after your name.
