Intensive Care Nurse

Intensive care nurses have special skill and knowledge to care for critically ill patients (such as severe burns; serious heart condition; after surgery for organ transplant or brain surgery; premature baby with difficult breathing) who need constant care (intensive care) by professional nurses.

Intensive care nurses work in intensive care units. These are rooms in the hospital with special equipment and monitors (ventilators, oxygen, suction) that nurses use.

Intensive care nurses help these patients by checking vital signs (temperature, pulse, breathing, blood pressure); checking IV fluid intake (fluid going into the vein), amount of urine output, level of consciousness (awake, alert, drowsy, unconscious). They give medications and turn patients to keep their skin in good condition. 

School Nurse

School nurses work with everyone in the school, (students, teachers, janitors, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers). Sometimes the nurse gives care or helps nurse assistants to give care.

Informatics nurses are in a new kind of nursing. They do not give care to patients but 'work behind the scenes' to help other people understand what nurses do. Informatics nurses are like language translators.

These nurses may not take care of patients but they work with other nurses who do. The work of nurse researchers is to find ways to improve the care nurses give; to help patients; and to teach nurses to do research.

Nurse researchers work in colleges of nursing and hospitals or clinics. 

How do Research  nurses help?

They are doing research like: how to keep pressure sores from starting on patients' skin and if sores do begin, how to care for them; how to measure how bad it hurts when patients have pain and how to pick the best treatment to help the patient; how measure frequency of visits by the nurse.
