Jim O'Dell, M.D., Program Director

Jim O'Dell, M.D.  
Dr. O’Dell received his B.S. in engineering at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, after which he completed medical school at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.  He was a resident, and Chief Resident, in internal medicine at UNMC.  He completed fellowships (in research and subspecialty training) in Rheumatology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.    He is Bruce Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at UNMC and at Omaha’s VA medical center, and he is immediate past-President of the American College of Rheumatology.  Dr. O’Dell is an internationally-recognized expert in the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and editor of the Textbook of Rheumatology and UpToDate (RA sections).  More importantly for residency applicants, he went into academic medicine to teach and has been the Director of UNMC’s Internal Medicine Residency for 28 years (one of the longest streaks in the country), reflecting his passion for training and education.
