The University of Nebraska Medical Center is the only state aided academic institution educating health professionals and has trained well over half of health professionals in Nebraska. The UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, established in 1899, provides care for over 20,000 patients annually. It is the only Department of Ophthalmology in Nebraska that provides residency training in Ophthalmology. In addition, the Department also has advanced fellowship training programs in Retina, Glaucoma, as well as in International Ophthalmology and Global Blindness Prevention (one of only two such fellowship programs in the United States). In May of 2013, the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute will open and is poised to become a center of excellence for eye care and research. In addition to the magnificent clinical facility, the Truhlsen Eye Institute also includes an advanced Diagnostic Center, the Carl Camras Center for Innovative Clinical Trials in Ophthalmology, and the Ocular Imaging Research and Reading Center. The clinical and research faculty at the premier Truhlsen Eye Institute combine state-of-the art diagnostic medicine with the latest advances in clinical and basic research to bring hope to patients suffering from blinding eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, corneal dystrophies, uveitis and other ocular inflammatory diseases.
