Outreach events/activities by Nebraska region

Community-driven collaborations and initiatives

The BHECN team continues to foster relationships with care providers, academic institutions and communities throughout the state of Nebraska.

BHECN's statewide plan includes establishment of behavioral health education, training and collaboration sites in each of our six regions.

Thus far, we’re ahead of schedule, partnering on recruitment, retention and training.

JULY/AUGUST/SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES:

Region 1: West Nebraska

Region 2: South/Southwest Nebraska

  • Ongoing CBPR meetings in Ogallala.
  • August 1, 2012: Kathy Seacrest, Region Director, hosted BHECN at a meeting with community leaders. Agenda: interactive discussions of the region's training needs, review of current community activities, and future goals for the area. Kathy also coordinated a meeting with Great Plains Regional Medical Center Administration and Behavioral Health Administrators.

Region 3: South Central Nebraska

  • Ongoing CBPR meetings were held in St. Paul.
  • A BHECN Advisory Council meeting will be held September 17th in Kearney.
  • BHECN conducted interviews with Region 3 consumers on trauma-informed care within services on July 26th. The interviews are a part of a larger trauma informed care project the region is participating in to enhance competency and avoid re-traumatizing practices.
  • A Training of Trainers workshop on Trauma-Informed Care was conducted in Kearney on August 10th. BHECN was a co-trainer of the event. The training was offered to 15 participants who were trained to offer the Orientation to Trauma Informed Care.
  • A workforce assessment was completed. The report information will guide retention, recruitment and training activities. Region 3 workforce assessment summary.

Region 4: North/Northeast Nebraska

  • A workforce assessment was completed. The report information will guide retention, recruitment and training activities. Region 4 workforce assessment summary.
  • July 24-25th, 2012 Ingrid Gansebom, Region Director, coordinated meetings for BHECN, UNMC Department of Psychiatry, Creighton Department of Psychiatry, with several Region 4 providers and community leaders. Ingrid also set up meetings with Faith Regional Hospital and Behavioral Health Specialists (BHS): an outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment center.
  • BHECN met with Wayne community leaders to begin coordinating a Mental Health First Aid Training in November. Participants will include law enforcement, public health, hospital staff, R-Way direct care staff and city administrators.
  • Ongoing CBPR* meetings in Albion.

Region 5: Southeast Nebraska

  • BHECN contracts with Open Door Initiative to provide consultation on trauma-informed care. The Initiative is funded by DOJ grand and focuses on enhancing behavioral health services for victims of domestic violence. Work group meetings are held twice monthly to develop a trauma informed care assessment tool for domestic violence, substance use disorder and mental health programs.
  • A workforce assessment is currently being conducted in Region 5.
  • BHECN met with Regional Administrator, CJ Johnson and other regional staff to discuss potential opportunities to partner on future projects, including the Ambassador Program.
  • BHECN offered a Walk the Walk: Compassion Fatigue workshop to 25 staff from Mental Health Association in Lincoln on July 30th.

Region 6: East Nebraska

  • A workforce assessment is currently being conducted in Region 6.
  • BHECN is participating on the Lasting Hope Recovery Center Consumer Advisory Board and is currently assisting in development of Recovery Module to be used for student orientation and newly hired employees at the facility.

Regional Administrators Meeting
BHECN participated in the Regional Administrators’ meeting on May 31, coordinated through the Division of Behavioral Health. All six regional administrators attended. BHECN offered a presentation on the Ambassador Program and BHECN West.
